After being passed by the city’s local assembly in December, today marks the beginning of legalized gay marriage in the Federal District of México (Mexico City, known locally as D.F. or simply “México”). The megalopolis of over 20 million people is home to 1 in 6 Mexicans, and is a bastion of liberal thinking in a conservative, traditional country. Thanks to the efforts of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (or PRD for its initals in Spanish), Mexico City will see its first gay wedding on March 12th.
Despite scathing, hateful tirades by the Catholic Church (using the old gimmick of a gay threat to children), and despite objections by President Felipe Calderón and his conservative National Action Party (PAN), who tried to get the Supreme Court to block the legislation, freedom and liberty in the capital city of México have overcome these bigotted antiquarians.
Cuauhtémoc, one of the burroughs of Mexico City, has already planned a mass wedding of at least 300 couples on March 14th, though they expect there may be even more. The law, which is one of the first in Latin America (with the exception of Uruguay and several cities in Argentina, Ecuador, and Colombia), also allows adoption by gay couples. Congratulations to all the newly engaged couples, and to Mexico City for taking the lead on gay rights, however unlikely it is to influence the rest of the nation.
