Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi is trying to rewrite the history of the United States. In Barbour’s mind, the Republican party is the champion of desegregation, and the 60s were some kind of integrated paradise. This attempt to collectively forget the past, to ignore the scourge of racism and its cost, and replace it with one that won’t nag on Southerner’s conscience is despicable. Barbour is a fraud, or worse.
