Microsoft Apologizes for ‘Fort Gay’ Gaffe

26-year-old West Virginia resident Josh Moore was upset when Microsoft and their XBox Live network suspended his gaming privileges, claiming he had used an “inappropriate” term after he listed his town as Fort Gay, WV. It’s a real place, and has been since 1789. But Microsoft’s customer service department refused to listen to Moore’s pleas. He urged them to Google it and provided them with the ZIP code, but they wouldn’t budge. They even threatened to cancel his membership without returning his fee. I guess at Microsoft, the customer isn’t always right…even when they are.

When the story finally got back to Microsoft, and after a failed attempt by the Fort Gay Mayor to intervene, they immediately said it was all a big mistake, and are offering a personal apology to the gamer and his town. I think they can afford to throw in a free lifetime membership to XBox Live. Especially since Moore missed out on a Search and Destroy mission in one of his games and his team lost. Total B.S.
