YouTube has come out with their recap of the top ten most popular videos of 2010 as voted on by viewers. The list is not that surprising but entertaining in a few instances, and in the case of the “annoying Orange,” reminds me of what I didn’t like about YouTube this past year.
The good stuff includes the discovery of teenager Greyson Chance who has now been signed to Ellen DeGeneres’ record label, OK Go’s creative music videos, and the Double Rainbow guy.
Here’s a recap of the Top 10 (list after the jump with individual video links):
#1: Bed Intruder Song – (over 47 million hits) — Antoine Dodson, a young hero from Huntsville, AL, saves his sister from an attack, then sings
an important message both to his community and to the attacker himself. The Gregory Brothers then take the news clips and Antoine’s annoying message and put it to music. Now, Antoine has made millions through ringtones, his own website, and selling his music on iTunes.
#2: Tik Tok Kesha Parody – (over 51 million hits)
#3: Greyson Chance ‘Paparazzi’ – After this 6th grader’s rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” went viral (over 34 million hits), he made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and was signed to a recording contract. He’s the new Justin Bieber…but with charisma and talent.
#4: Annoying Orange Wazzup – No comment.
#5: The Man Your Man Could Smell Like (Old Spice)- This Super Bowl ad quickly went viral and spawned a whole host of parodies and spoofs.
#6: Giant Double Rainbow – with almost 21 million hits, this guy was featured on most news programs and throughout the blogosphere, leaving all of us to ask the question: what the hell is this guy smoking?
#7: This Too Shall Pass OK Go – One of our favorite bands has been pumping out viral music videos since they first hit the scenese (and YouTube) performing on treadmills. This year, they went viral again with this incredibly timed video to “This too shall pass.”
#8: The Twilight Saga Eclipse Trailer – The trailer for the third installment of the Twilight Saga went viral with more than 12 million hits.
#9: Jimmy Surprises Bieber Fan – We hate Justin (for obvious reasons) but we love this little 3-year-old girl who is brought to tears just listening to the teen sensation. Jimmy Kimmell arranged for the young fan to meet her idol. The result: 19 million hits.
#10: Gymkhana Three, Part 2 – Shot just south of Paris, France in Linas at l’Autodrome de Linas –Montlhéry, this 1.58 mile oval track, built in 1924, features banks as steep as 51 degrees, which is more than double the standard incline of most NASCAR ovals. Chosen by Ken for this specific reason, the ramp-like banking proved to be a unique and exciting challenge. The driving physics for the stunts performed were totally unknown until Ken attempted the maneuvers during filming.
