During the debate this week on healthcare repeal in the House of Representatives, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) took to the floor and argued that the GOP’s blatant lies and disinformation on aspects of the Affordable Care Act can be compared to the Nazi propaganda machine headed by Hitler’s pal Joseph Goebbels. ““They say it’s a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels,” Cohen said. “You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That’s the same kind of thing,” the Congressman claimed.
Watch Rep. Cohen’s analogy:
I really don’t see a problem with that statement. Rep. Cohen wasn’t saying that the right-wing IS the Nazi Party, or that they are responsible for atrocities like the Nazi regime. He was making a comparison to extremist propaganda tactics by conservatives that are eerily similar to those instituted by the Nazis. Repeat the lie often enough and some begin to accept it as truth.
But The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart, who is Jewish, understandably took a different view of Cohen’s comparison in light of recent events like the Arizona massacre, and took the Congressman to task over his analogy, which came a week after Cohen eloquently called for civility in our political debate.
