GOP and the Healthcare Hypocrisy:
- Hypocrisy watch Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) is now supporting a plan that has both the “unconstitutional” individual mandate and the “socialistic” public option. I guess they’re only bad ideas when the come from the Left. (No, it’s not a compromise.) Meanwhile, Newt has a plan that will bankrupt Medicare: “…under Gingrich’s plan, Medicare costs would go up by $35 billion, and of that, about $30 billion would be wasted.”
- Republicans running from themselves - Health care plans including an individual mandate have been proposed or co-sponsored by Bob Dole, the Heritage Foundation, Phil Gramm, Chuck Grassley, Orrin Hatch, Richard Lugar, Judd Gregg, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Jesse Helms, Lamar Alexander, Bob Corker, Mike Crapo, and Strom Thurmond — and that’s only a partial list. In 2008, Jim DeMint endorsed Mitt Romney for president, and specifically mentioned his health-care plan as one of Romney’s qualifications. The Republican Party has since turned on the individual mandate. But if past support for the policy is a conservative litmus test, then Phil Gramm, Jesse Helms and the Heritage Foundation are no longer conservatives in good standing. And that’s absurd.
- Is Newt friendless? National Review dedicates an entire issue to taking him down.
- No kidding. - Feds: Sheriff Joe Arpaio “promoted a culture of bias” and discriminated against Latinos
- As it turns out, most of the advertisers supporting “All American Muslim” did not pull their ads. That makes the Florida Family Association liars as well as bigots.
- New census data: half of us are now poor or low income. Here’s a long but worthy piece to help get your head around inequality.
- The sneaky return of debtor’s prisons - You will be unsurprised to learn that the targets of this practice seldom have lawyers, seldom know their rights, and get no help from judges. Creditors, needless to say, suffer from none of these handicaps.
- Go here to support Sen. Bernie Sanders’ constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United
- You wouldn’t guess if from the headlines, but the war in Iraq is over
- Newt’s tax plan would drop taxes on the 1% to the lowest level in modern history and give the 1% a bigger tax cut than the bottom 99% combined.
Wisconsin Watch – Gov. Scott ‘Dubya’ Walker:
- Gov Dubya fast-tracks a strip-mining giveaway bill to open a 21-mile hole in Wisconsin. Maybe he’s hurrying because he’s heard the rumor that the Dems have already collected signatures to force a recall election.
- Looks like Gov Dubya messed with the wrong Wisconsin grandma
- The secret investigation of Gov Dubya’s pals nets its first arrest.
