No Joke: Callista Gingrich is Giving Up Her Opinion for Lent (VIDEO)

The Gingrich campaign is insisting that the candidate’s wife was making a little funny today when a reporter asked her what she was giving up for Lent and she replied, “I am giving up my opinion.” Of course she giggled when she said it and her husband was all too quick to point out “that doesn’t count.” But once you examine the context the whole thing doesn’t seem like a joke.

Why does Callista’s ‘joke’ reveal a serious truth about her and other conservative women like her?

  1. The current Republican War on Women
  2. Newt’s matrimonial record shows how little he respects women
  3. Callista has remained virtually silent through the campaign so far. It is typical for presidential candidates to use their spouse as an extension of their efforts.
  4. Most women probably view Callista as a ‘Stepford Wife’
  5. Look at her hair
  6. Don’t look into her eyes

Andrew Belonsky of Death and Taxes adds:

Like so many of his political peers, Gingrich believes President Obama’s recent, and since revoked, order that insurance companies cover contraception qualifies as some kind of “war on religion” because birth control is sinful and women should want to have children. That’s what he and so many other male lawmakers believe, and that’s why they think it should be the law of the land.

To conservatives, men and women alike, women are meant to be mothers and wives ahead of anything else. They are inherently weaker than men, an idea conservative matriarch Phyllis Schlafly helped spread back in the 1960s, and an idea that she still holds today.

Callista’s joke just turned into a scary peek into the mind of today’s conservative woman.

Oh, Newt’s giving up desserts. However, he refuses to give up McDonalds.
