Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

That is the text of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. In Virginia, our country’s First Amendment apparently holds no sway, which was obvious when a group of protesters – men and women – organized at the state capitol on Saturday to protest the GOP’s surging war on women.

Virginia, with its recent rape by the state law, has been a poster child for this war and its governor, Bob McDonnell, is said to be on the short list for vice president in the upcoming election. If you want to know what things are going to look like under Republican rule, you need look no further.

As the demonstrators peacefully made their way to the capitol steps, the police made the decision to call in riot police and a SWAT team armed with machine guns. Let me repeat that: a SWAT team armed with machine guns against peaceful, unarmed citizens.

Let’s be clear: this was a peaceful protest, there was no trouble being caused, and the citizens were exercising their rights under the Constitution, and it’s pretty clear from the video (below) that the police decided on unnecessary force before the event even began. The protesters were isolated on the steps of the capitol, and then they were dragged away one by one. One woman was physically picked up by her arms and her legs by four men, with the armed-to-the-teeth SWAT team standing by.

This footage is so visceral and it shows us all that the police state is alive and well and growing in power. From this footage, one could make the argument that the militaristic police forces in our country are no longer here to protect and serve the community, they are here to use force against it. One of the protesters in the video observed:

                  “I wonder what Thomas Jefferson would think of this?”

He would think that the Great American Experiment has failed and he would weep.
