Rick Santorum is becoming increasingly defensive about his stand on birth control and contraception. The GOP presidential contender brings it up on the campaign trail EVERY chance he gets. So, why is that Santorum accuses the media of “gotcha” questions whenever one of them questions the candidate on his views? Santorum got into a very heated exchange with fellow Republican and MSNBC host Joe Scarborough on Monday because he felt “pigeonholed” about the whole contraception issue.
Scarborough started off by reminding Santorum that in 2011 he promised not to “shy away” from the contraception debate and asked him whether he regretted saying that.
Joe: “Do you regret saying that?” [Santorum laughs.] “I know you laugh about it, but I could give you chapter and verse.”
Santorum: ”This is you guys playing sort of gotcha politics.”
Joe: “No.”
Santorum: ”I wasn’t talking about access to contraception. That wasn’t the issue.”
Joe: “Just so you know, we have been critical, I have been critical of the focus on this issue of contraception. I brought it up with you today because we’ve talked about it a lot … and we want you to respond to it.”
When Joe decided to move on it was Santorum who continued to harp on the subject.
Santorum: “Joe and Mika, hold on one second. Let’s just deal with reality instead of what the media tries to do, which is to pigeonhole you and tell a narrative.”
Joe: “You’ve known me for a long time. Do you think I’m trying to pigeonhole you and stereotype you?”
Santorum: “Well, from the fact that you continue to bring it up, yeah, sure!
Joe: “Why would I? I think my record on this in Congress was the same as yours … I was ready to move on and then you keep talking about it.”
