What happened to the Massachusetts debt? Mitt Romney happened!
Mitt Romney was elected governor of Massachusetts and took office in January of 2003. He did not seek re-election, and left office in January of 2007.
Data points represent the state’s debt at the end of each fiscal year. Massachusetts debt broke the previous years’ trend and took a steep jump from $48,478,722 at the end of fiscal year 2003 to $57,163,315 at the end of fiscal year 2004. So much for “small government” and “curbing spending”!
