Everyone has been having a good laugh at Clint Eastwood’s ‘speech’ at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, in which he spent primetime television coverage talking to a chair supposedly representative of an ‘absent’ President Obama. However, a recent quote in an interview suggests that perhaps rather than being senile and deserving of our pity, laughter, and second-hand embarrassment, Eastwood could have possibly been attempting to make the RNC look foolish on purpose and might be deserving of our praise and thanks.
From The Washington Post:
“If somebody’s dumb enough to ask me to go to a political convention and say something, they’re gonna have to take what they get.”
When asked if he would pull the whole talking to a chair stunt again, Eastwood said:
“I don’t know. I never look backwards. It’s done and it’s done. I probably would.”
Well, we all know Eastwood is a great, Oscar-Winning actor. Wouldn’t it be grand if he just played the ultimate role of a lifetime and trolled the entire RNC? We sure can hope!

Ms. Barber, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Up until now, I thought that I was the only one harboring this deliciously nasty thought, but no more!
The pleasure is definitely returned, Mr. Lipman! The RNC, and indeed the entire campaign this election season, has been, and continues to be, a scandalous circus of epic proportions. I really hope we’re right on this one! You are certainly not the only one who thinks Clint Eastwood did this on purpose.
Remember he is an actor and not a very good one, so anything is possible.
While he is getting on in years, he can still make movies, so one would do well to discount senility. It looked like a Stephen Colbert satire masterpiece to me. We know Eastwood is not socially conservative. He might have been amused that the RNC figured he was some sort of RW icon due to the roles he has played. Might have been funny to them that they rail against Hollywood while being all star struck at the chance of getting a big movie star/producer/director of their very own.
And he nailed the stereotypical GOP voter who bases their vote on wedge issues rather than real policy.
Exactly. I really think he took a satirical turn with this one. And you’re right, a social conservative he is not.
One need only remember the commercial he did that was aired during the Superbowl to cause you to think ha might have been pulling a Stephan Colbert!
yep…I agree, the GOP ripped into him for that…..I think he was playing that crazy old lady at McCains rally. A Teabagger…showing the country that there is an invisible Obama that the GOP keep talking about…..and he did it right under their noses.
This is a fond thought, and one that I have had. However, Clint’s interview in Esquire magazine this week didn’t reflect it.
I whole-heartlily disagree! I think because he has movie out he is flip-flopping like Willard.
He is lying. Spike Lee read him just right. He probably did the chair thing to up ratings of his boring movie and it backfired. This guy is doing a reality show? Why?
No, he did not pull a fast one. Half of the time he could not think and whatever he was saying made absolutely no sense at alll.
Why would they allow this and not screen this satire chair thing shows you what a pitiful campaign have been running. Without the beltway media to push their crap, they are clueless.
I agree that his movie is boring, and that he could have been doing this to up ratings. However, I still think he could have been making them look foolish on purpose. He is no stranger to satire.
