Slavery. Quite possibly the most shameful part of American history to most modern Americans, but not to the GOP. The Stew recently reported on how GOP Legislator Jon Hubbard said that slavery was good for the black race. Now, we have another nutcase –one of the Stew’s favorite right-wing crazies– making outrageous statements regarding this abominable practice. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) actually said that America was better off during the times of slavery. Yep, you heard me right. In his own words:
“There is so much that is so critical to whether or not this country continues…No explanation as to why we’ve been so blessed other than the people who went before us were blessed, they followed God’s rule book, in our founding they followed biblical teachings. We strayed away at different times, Andrew Jackson’s time was not a great time, at different times slavery was a blot on our existence, but the trouble is we have never as an entire nation overall been so far away from God’s teaching and so openly rebelling, even from the top, against God’s teachings in the Bible.”
I know I am a broken record here, but, once again, God’s Own Party:
America is NOT A CHRISTIAN NATION. I REPEAT- AMERICA IS NOT A CHRISTIAN NATION.
However, as I said before, the man is a nut, and we here at the Stew have plenty of proof of that for your reading pleasure. I doubt he would ever understand what I just reminded him of, because he buys into that GOP revisionist history. Believe me, if you’re bored on a rainy afternoon and need a laugh, or just something to spice up your evening, give this guy’s antics a whirl. Talk about your nuttiest of baggers who still can’t accept that the North won the war, that women can vote and control our own bodies, that gay people exist, and that black people are citizens just like them. When will American come into the 21st century? No wonder we’re so backwards, with freaks like this character running the nation. Shame, shame.

So where did he say slavery was a good thing? Did you forget to post that part?
Did you not read the part where he insinuates that because we were closer to “god” back then, we were better off?
He did say that but he didn’t say it was better because of slavery. On slavery you quote him as saying “at different times slavery was a blot on our existence”. That is certainly an understatement. It didn’t appear to me he was endorsing slavery. I’m not keen on bible bashers. I don’t like people counting on imaginary magic people in the sky to put things right when they should be getting off their knees and doing it themselves. But i’ve got to call it as i see it here. He’s probably thinking exactly what you’re reading out of his comments, people like that tend to think that way, but he’s not saying it. Or at least it doesn’t appear that way to me. Ayway keep up the good work and good luck!
