My first introduction to hillbilly porn was in the movie Deliverance. After I saw the movie, all the snide little comments I had heard from other guys such as, “He looks like he’s right out of Deliverance,” started to make since. Of course, that hillbilly porn had only a small cameo in the movie. Today, hillbilly themed pornography is in full production and is partly attributed to the variety of hillbilly and redneck reality cable shows.
TMZ reported recently that “hillbilly,” “redneck” and “southern” themed adult content videos have blossomed three-fold since since cable TV reality shows such as “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” “Duck Dynasty,” and “Swamp People” hit the cable box. And don’t think it’s only straight pornography that is chock full of titles such as “Hillbilly Honeys,” “Hillbilly Hippie,” and “Hillbilly Ho Down,” gay porn is getting in on the action with “Retro Gay Hillbilly” (whatever that means).
Whereas you might say that pornography is the ultimate in reality entertainment, some of the cable shows inspiring the hillbilly porn seem just as staged and contrived as their X rated counter parts. To be honest, I don’t know which is worst, the dehumanizing of people in pornography or the dehumanizing of people in reality shows. At least pornography doesn’t subversively mock the character’s intelligence, lifestyle and beliefs like TV reality shows.
Both hillbilly porn and hillbilly TV reality have much in common. In addition to their costumes, they both are cheap to produce and can make the studios (TLC, A&E, History Channel) lots of money. I wouldn’t be surprised if you see some guest appearances between the porn and reality shows just for cross-promotional purposes. If the report of hillbilly porn production increasing is accurate, we can certainly assume they share a mutual audience. It’s unfortunate to think that once respectable companies such as TLC, A&E and the History Channel are pandering to an audience inclined to laugh at other people’s challenges.
America has always been intrigued with the musings and lifestyles of folks typically associated with hillbilly cultures. From the early beginnings of TV, The Andy Griffith Show, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction and Beverly Hill Billies made families laugh at the slow witted humor of the characters. But who knew men were secretly lusting after Elly May Clampette while wearing bib overalls.
Actually, I always suspected the original Dukes of Hazzard TV show was probably spawned from a better produced porno flick about fast cars and and women in jean shorts. The characters of Luke Duke, Bo Duke and Daisy Duke not only had bad hillbilly names but their acting abilities were on par with adult cinema super stars of the day. Just looking at a promotional photo for the Dukes of Hazzard evokes images of the porno video sleeves you would accidentally stumble across in the “Adults Only” section of your local video store: two hot young studs, leaning against a hot rod car, with a hottie chick lying on the roof with short shorts.
Perhaps our obsession to participate in Civil War re-enactments or dress as a hobbit or wizard for a movie premiere is also at the core for hillbilly porn. Secretly, deep within the curvilinear streets of American suburbia, men want to hillbilly with their gals. It is really disturbing to think that my neighbor, who wears a suit to work, harbors a fantasy of wearing a dirty baseball cap, suspenders, and a ripped t-shirt while engaging in a sexual escapade on the bayou. But what else can I assume when he tells me he thinks “Duck Dynasty” is a “hella funny” show.
After innumerable hours researching the porn industry, just not the websites, I can’t find any reliable statistics indicating that more hillbilly porn videos are being made today than 2 years ago. The porn industry is a case study in nimble production and marketing adjustments. Within weeks of a hot pop culture fad, producers of porn can whip out videos capitalizing on the trend. They constantly have their hand wrapped around the pulse of the male pornography consumer. Heck, I even came across videos directed at Sarah Palin fantasizers with titles like “Hot Alaskan Knights” and “Hot Shot Sara.”
The only difference between the hillbilly shows of the ’60′s and ’70′s and their associated pornographic spin-offs is that media sites are more willing to report on the connection. If PSY-Gangnam catches on with the old man demographic, you’ll see just as many pornographic offerings under that title as hillbilly and redneck.
P.S. I will be spending the next couple of days scrubbing and deleting all my research for this subject from my computer.
