Fox News demonstrates once again that they have their collective heads so far up the Republican dog–ma, they can no longer see the light of irony or hypocrisy of their own statements. News ‘personalities’ for Fox, including Eric Bolling and Dana Perino, have endorsed an individual mandate to own a gun as proposed by the town of Nelson, Georgia.
The city council proposed a new law requiring every head of a household in this town of 1,000 residents to possess a firearm. Nelson has only one police officer and the town feels it is vulnerable when he’s busy or not around:
The Nelson, Ga. city council gave preliminary approval Tuesday to the “Family Protection Act,” a proposed ordinance requiring the head of every household to own a firearm. It will go to a final vote next month.
…the proposal was submitted by a city council official over concerns that the current lack of a police presence — which often leaves Nelson patrolled by a single officer or none at all — makes the town’s residents unsafe.
“When he’s not here we rely on county sheriffs — however it takes a while for them to get here,” Nelson City Councilman Duane Cronic told WSB-TV of the plan, going on to call it a “deterrent ordinance.”
Fox’s advocacy of a gun in every house mandated by the government is in striking contrast to their opposition that every American must purchase health insurance. The individual mandate to purchase health insurance, upheld by the Supreme Court, has been the rallying cry for Fox News against big government controlling our lives. But because the mandatory gun ownership comes from a small town in Georgia, Fox News deems it liberty friendly.
Scared white guy and Fox News analyst Greg Gutfeld gleefully acknowledge the irony of the individual mandate for guns and health insurance, with the irony zipping over his head, while infering that white people need to arm themselves against black people:
“Mandatory gun ownership? The next thing you know we have mandatory health care. Weird. And why is this so radical? At least the town is doing this legally, unlike Detroit and Chicago, where you have mandatory gun ownership – it’s called gang membership.”
Mr. Gutfeld must have forgotten the other state sanctioned gangs whose membership includes gun ownership: state militias. But I would assume that Mr. Gutfeld approves of those gangs because they are comprised of mostly white people.
Dana Perino seemed as confused as Gutfeld with her arguments in favor of an individual mandate for gun ownership that made no sense either:
“Yeah, so I’m for local control and for Washington to mind its own business. The local control that was tried here in New York City yesterday was about soda drinking. I think that this one — if this town feels that this is what they need to do to protect themselves, I’m for it. Plus, if it’s mandatory, people will be trained, they’ll have the background checks. and all the laws will be covered.”
Perino is against local control in New York City’s banning jumbo sodas but she is for local control for Nelson, Geogia, to mandate a gun in every home. Her simplistic analysis erroneously leads her to believe that background checks, which the GOP is against, will be performed along with training. The Nelson City councily proposal includes none of the prudent gun control measures that Perino supposedly endorses.
I can only conclude from the mindless endorsement of an individual mandate for gun ownership on Fox News that it was an NRA inspired story gone awry. This had to have been a paid political position endorsement from the NRA. Just like tobacco companies pay movie studios to have the actors smoke a certain brand of cigarette in a film, the NRA must have paid Fox News to trumpet government laws to promote gun sales.
The Fox News analyst’s discussion descended into contradictory and racist statements befitting a satirical parody on Saturday Night Live. This is why universal health care insurance is so important; uninformed right wing pundits shooting themselves in the foot necessitating an infusion of common sense. Alas, Fox News is immune from feeling the pain of their hypocrisy…and their own stupidity.
