In March, we were warned about the continued attempts by Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va) and his Republican cohorts to continually bow to their corporate sugar daddies and deny basic rights and benefits for American workers. Minimum wage and overtime pay continue to be in danger, and now the Republican-controlled Congress is attempting to take tangible steps to see that this agenda is implemented.
With the recent proposal by Rep. Martha Roby (R-Al) and subsequent passage of the shamelessly named Working Families Flexibility Act (H.R. 1406), house Republicans are still trying to end mandated overtime pay for hourly workers, amending the guarantee of a valuable benefit provided by the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. As many may recall from the announcement of the bill’s proposal, the ridiculous justification for this bill is that it would afford more free time to spend with family, attend PTA meetings, or go on a field trip. Sorry, Mr. Cantor, but Americans already do those things. It’s what we call a day off! Fortunately, the bill will likely die in the Senate, and President Obama has stated that he will veto it, should it make its way to his desk.
To show our support for hard-working Americans who depend on overtime pay, there are measures that we can take to let house lawmakers know that constituents won’t stand for more of their tactics of greed and deception at our expense. Make a phone call, send an email, tweet, and rant on social media sites to inform others of this latest affront to working-class Americans.
