At this year’s right-wing RightOnLine conference, conservative blogger Bill Whittle unleashed a tidal wave of blame and hatred for the animated series Family Guy, accusing the Griffins of promoting anti-American and anti-Republican messages with today’s youth, while reminiscing about the bygone days of pro-Liberty shows like Superman and Gilligan’s Island.
At the conference, which is produced by the Koch Brothers front group “Americans for [their own]Prosperity,” Whittle said:
“Any audience of people that grew up with classical Superman automatically love this country, because Superman is about the best America we can be. When Superman was all over the pop culture, we were a nation that loved this country. Now, twenty years after the peak of Superman‘s popularity, along comes Gilligan’s Island. That’s pretty neutral in terms of politics. Really about the only message you can get from Gilligan’s Island is if you want to get off the island all you have to do is kill Gilligan.”
“But if you’re a young person out there today and you can finish the theme song from Family Guy, then all the anti-American, anti-capitalist, anti-Christian, anti-morality messages of Family Guy are in your head as completely and thoroughly as that theme song is.”
Did he just condone the killing of Gilligan in the name of self-preservation? Typical Republican.
Whittle fails to mention that America was a different country when Superman (the original 1950′s version) was the top-rated television show. There were no attacks on unions, at-will work states, voter ID laws, a livable wage, and no Tea Party. And let us not forget that Superman promoted “truth, justice, and the American way.” These are all things that the GOP abhors in today’s political climate.
Whittle blames shows like Family Guy for the Republican’s losing streak in recent elections and insists that future electoral success is tied to Conservative consumption of more pro-GOP narratives:
“You’re programmed by the pop culture, you’re programed by story. It’s all about stories, and if we’re the villain in all of the stories that are told we’re never going to win another election again.”
Yes, it’s Stewie’s fault the Republicans keep losing elections and are out of touch with average American voters. It couldn’t have anything to do with voter suppression efforts, the war on women, racism, blind hatred for President Obama, obstructionism, brinkmanship, advocating for the 1%, destroying the safety net for the hungry and poor, or the ridiculous tirades of assholes like Whittle, who want to blame everyone and everything but their own outdated and puritanical ideology. Or the fact that people like Whittle go out of their way to promote the Koch Brothers’ anti-American policies.
