After being sentenced to life in prison just a month ago, Ariel Castro, who was responsible for kidnapping and imprisoning three three women in his Cleveland home for more than a decade, was discovered hanged in his prison cell on Tuesday night, apparently choosing suicide over the reality of life behind bars as punishment for his monstrous crimes.
Castro was discovered by guards hanging in his cell at the Correction Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, where he was being evaluated on where he would be placed to serve out his life sentence. He was under protective custody but not on suicide watch. Guards checked on Castro every 30 minutes.
Medical staff at the prison attempted to revive Castro unsuccessfully before transporting him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 10:50 local time.
Castro’s attorney, Craig Weintraub, told NBC’s Today Show this morning that the Castro family was ”devastated by the news.” Weintraub also pledged to “get to the bottom” of the conditions surrounding Castro’s death, adding that, “this is a human being.”
