Mother’s Day, like Father’s Day, sometimes seems more of a clever idea to sell gifts and Hallmark cards than a real holiday of significance. But in truth, it’s more what you make of it. As busy as life is these days, it’s good to set a day aside and let important people in your life you know you appreciate them. However, we can take this holiday to extremes and put our mothers on pedestals, ignoring any fact that does not contribute to their sainthood and in the process making them very 2-dimensional people. Sentiment can remove us from whom our mothers really are, and that’s a shame because most of them are terrific women, faults and all.
