Emily Herx, a well-regarded English teacher at St. Vincent de Paul School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was fired last June after she requested time off to undergo in-vitro fertilization (IVF). According to the school’s Pastor, Msgr. John Kuzmich, Mrs. Herx is a “grave, immoral sinner” for undergoing these treatments because IVF kills embryos and that is morally unacceptable.

President Barack Obama was greeted by deafening cheers and thunderous applause today while delivering the commencement address at the all-female Barnard College. The president shared billing with Evan Wolfson, the founder of the grassroots organization Freedom to Marry, advocating for marriage equality. The overall themes of discrimination, liberty, and pursuit were inspiring and provided a stark contrast between this president and his conservative opponent and detractors.
Few women in the world have matched or exceeded the accomplishments of Hillary Clinton. Yet few names can evoke the intense opinions that her name, especially in the past, has evoked. With all of her success on the national and world stages it seems there should be plenty of material for discussion about her and her international impact. For reasons that seem to materialize only in regard to successful women, the topic of conversation regarding her recently has to do with how she looks.
The new issue of Newsweek is out and the cover features President Obama with a rainbow halo and the declaration “The First Gay President.” The news magazine’s bold cover comes a week after Obama became the first sitting president ever to declare support for marriage equality.
