We Serve It, Even When It's Hard To Swallow
On Tuesday, the Dow Jones industrial average, fueled by optimism that the economic recovery is finally a reality, crossed the 13,000 mark for the first time since May 2008. Naturally, such encouraging economic news couldn’t help but make GOP Presidential candidate Rick Santorum, think of President Obama’s former Pastor –the Reverend Jeremiah Wright–, and in the process, yet again craftily call into question the President’s religion.
On Tuesday’s edition of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Rev. Franklin Graham, the evangelist and son of Billy Graham, expressed uncertainty as to whether President Obama was in fact a Christian, while ‘certifying’ the Christian credentials of Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich. Graham took the right-wing’s classification of President Obama as anything other than American by claiming that “Islam sees him as a son of Islam.”
Speaking to a group of College Republicans at the extremely religious conservative Oral Roberts University, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum accused the left of bringing about the “death of reason” because Liberals “won’t sit and reason” with narrow-minded people like himself over issues concerning gay rights, reproductive health or education.
Contrary to what the Christian conservative-pandering GOP right-wingers want you to believe, this is a secular nation. It is not a Christian nation, and certainly not a Catholic nation. Our guiding principles are laid out in what we call the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, not in the Old and/or New Testament. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
There’s nothing like a little nostalgia to get the blood boiling. Today’s trip down memory lane will focus on The Moral Majority, the brainchild of the Reverend Jerry Falwell. It was back in 1976 when Falwell chose to go against the traditional Baptist vision of separating church from state because he was simply disgusted by the decay of the nation’s morality. On today’s 700 Club, televangelist (snake oil salesman) Pat Robertson claimed that President Obama is building a dictatorship by pushing progressive policies. As usual, the senile Robertson offered no proof to support his wild accusation.
The annual gathering of conservative wackos at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) provide such a wealth of material for progressive blogs like Veracity Stew. It’s pure gold during an election year. For example, during a panel discussion on faith, family and culture on Friday, one Evangelical conservative insisted that gays are getting married because Christians have just been to nice and accommodating and they need to stop compromising.
On Friday, we saw President Obama make the grand compromise in bending to the religious right over the birth control mandate in the Affordable Care Act. It was a fair compromise in most respects, and will still ensure that women have access to free preventative services as well as birth control, even if the religiously affiliated employer chooses not to provide insurance that covers those particular benefits because of their delicate religious sensibilities.
Mike Huckabee opened the annual CPAC gathering on Friday with a religious lesson for President Barack Obama. It seems that Mike is upset that the president suggested that Jesus would approve of everyone paying their fair share of taxes in order to achieve social and economic equality.
