On Friday’s Real Time with Bill Maher, videographer Alexandra Pelosi (the daughter of Democratic Majority Leader Nancy Peolosi), took her video camera on the road to start reporting from all over America as we head into the final stretch of the 2012 presidential campaign season. For her first project, Pelosi went to the poorest state in America: Mississippi. The state is overwhelmingly conservative and votes Republican time and time again. The only thing is that these people cannot figure out why they vote Republican when it’s against their own best interests.
According to published sources, a former Bush administration official, representing the powerful payroll processing industry, is responsible for a letter to House Republicans encouraging them to reject the Senate plan to extend the payroll tax cut for working-class Americans. The letter has now become a major talking point for the Teapublicans in defense of their treasonous acts against average taxpayers.
The U.S. Supreme Court has officially scheduled oral arguments regarding the constitutionality of President Obama’s landmark Affordable Care Act, particularly the healthcare reform’s individual mandate. The announcement confirms earlier speculation that the high court would issue a ruling on the healthcare law next year, during the heat of the 2012 presidential campaign.
The disgraced former House speaker revealed in a phone call with reporters Saturday, that as president, he would throw out entire courts and judges whose decisions he doesn’t agree with or like.
The speaker’s opposition came as a complete surprise to fellow Republicans in the Senate, who overwhelmingly supported the bill, and after Boehner had privately praised the legislation during a reported conference call with members of his own party. But that was before Eric Cantor and his fellow Teapublicans voiced their opposition.
Several hundred demonstrators used a ladder to scale a fence surrounding a vacant lot owned by the Episcopal church near the 9/11 memorial site. But if these protesting American citizens, most out of work and hungry, thought they would find understanding and sanctuary from the church, they were sadly mistaken.
The CWA opposes gay rights, comprehensive sex education, drug and alcohol education, and feminism. It touts “pro-life” and “pro-family” values. A few days ago, Concerned Women for America posted a video (below0 with Crouse rattling off a litany of statistics about the gay community’s threat to traditional marriage. Janice’s God only knows where she got the statistics she presented in the video. I’ve tried to find them prior to writing this rebuttal without much luck.
I happen to think that, as Progressives, we have a greater responsibility to question the President on his policies, because we’re the ones who put him into office, and if we refuse to be honest about our own guy, then all of those derisive spitballs lobbed at the other side are nothing more than a grand exercise in hypocrisy of the worst kind.
Congress and the U.S. Education Department are scrutinizing for-profit colleges, which received almost $32 billion in federal grants and loans in the 2009-2010 school year. Students at those schools are defaulting on government loans at higher rates than those who attend nonprofit and public institutions.
Does this list speak of a leader who strives for virtue in everything he does? Does it speak of preserving justice and working for the good of the whole? Does it speak of one who is sympathetic to the misfortunes of others? Where, in this legacy, do we find a “greatness of soul”? I can’t find it.
When people ask me why these two candidates are so important, my answer is very simple: Both women are true progressives, and that’s what America needs. It’s pretty clear that the present ‘system’ of electing our leaders isn’t going to change any time soon. We’ve made halfhearted attempts at reforming the election process and have basically gotten nowhere.
In their minds, the constant onslaught of Christmas imagery, programming and commercials during the months of November and December is simply not good enough; the salutation of “Happy Holidays” is a slap in the face to their sweet Baby Jesus and an insult to their religion, because, according to them, it’s their world, we’re just living in it.
No one is opposed to young people learning a strong work ethic. It’s a natural part of growing up and proper parenting. But that’s not what Gingrich and his cohorts are referring to. They truly believe that child labor laws should be relaxed or abolished all together in order to create a permanent working class of children.
