We Serve It, Even When It's Hard To Swallow
Why do conservatives love war? This is one of those questions that can’t be answered in simple terms. I’ve spent a bit of time researching the plausible answers to this one. I also know people on both sides of the political spectrum and have spoken to them over this past week. There are no simple answers to this question, and neither is there a single answer. Let’s just look at a couple of things that differentiate liberals from conservatives.
There’s no question that the United States has a fixation on the Middle East. It has been that way since September 11, 2001. Since that fateful day, we’ve spent trillions of dollars fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and bombing Yemen and Pakistan – all in the name of making our nation safe from Al Qaeda. There’s just one little problem with all of this: We’re not any safer than we were on September 11, 2001. In fact, I think it’s not inaccurate to say that we’re less safe. The threat of another September 11 will always be there as long as we continue this foolish Middle East policy. And now, the House Armed Services Committee and the GOP have a new demon to fixate on: Iran.
I happen to think that, as Progressives, we have a greater responsibility to question the President on his policies, because we’re the ones who put him into office, and if we refuse to be honest about our own guy, then all of those derisive spitballs lobbed at the other side are nothing more than a grand exercise in hypocrisy of the worst kind.
President Obama has promised to veto the measure if it makes it to his desk.The Pentagon, the intelligence community and the Justice Department oppose the new provisions, and is calling on the Senate to “take up as its first order of business [Thursday] morning striking it in its entirety.”
Applying this military custody requirement to individuals inside the United States, as some Members of Congress have suggested is their intention, would raise serious and unsettled legal questions and would be inconsistent with the fundamental American principle that our military does not patrol our streets.
This is one of those rare video finds that takes the time to explain in the simplest terms how the American economy got so screwed up, how the wealthiest 1% assumed so much control, why there is a need for the Occupy movement to succeed, and the real difference between Democrats and Republicans.
What can we say about last night’s moronic and embarrassing GOP presidential debate in Washington, D.C.? Romney opened with a lie when he said his name was Mitt. His real first name is Willard. Herman Cain kept calling the moderator Blitz. Those were the lighthearted moments. Here’s the latest GOP train wreck in 60 seconds…
“Mic Check! Karl Rove is the Architect. The Architect of Occupy Iraq. The Architect of Occupy Afghanistan. The Architect of tax cuts for the 1%. The 99% think it’s time to Occupy the Architect. The woman is full of political shit, and she, along with her fellow Bushies, have a helluva a lot to answer for, and just because the troops are coming home from Iraq at the end of the year, that doesn’t absolve them of the horrific responsibility they bear in taking this country down a road that should never have been traveled in the first place.
At several points during the hearing, protesters loudly and passionately stopped proceedings before being removed. One young man, who identified himself as an Iraq war veteran, said loudly: “We murdered people! I saw what we did to people!”
Professional GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney spoke earlier today on foreign policy at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., and promised to reverse President Obama’s trend of defense cuts…the only problem is that the defense cuts Mitt refers to don’t exist…
“We don’t believe in the kind of smallness that says it’s okay for a stage full of political leaders — one of whom could end up being the president of the United States — being silent when an American soldier is booed. We don’t believe in that.”

Bush made conservatism forsake conservative values. Bush’s main legacy is not the Tea Party stupidity of not knowing a whit about American history, or the stupidity of Sarah Palin’s word salad incoherence, or the stupidity of Michelle Bachmann’s anti-education crusade, or even the stupidity of Rick Perry’s proud anti-science positions – although all of that is in the mix — rather, Bush brought stupidity to our national values.
