We Serve It, Even When It's Hard To Swallow

The U.S. Supreme Court has officially scheduled oral arguments regarding the constitutionality of President Obama’s landmark Affordable Care Act, particularly the healthcare reform’s individual mandate. The announcement confirms earlier speculation that the high court would issue a ruling on the healthcare law next year, during the heat of the 2012 presidential campaign.

It really is kind of disturbing to think that Newt Gingrich is sitting atop the polls in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, because he’s just…bad. I happen to think that, as Progressives, we have a greater responsibility to question the President on his policies, because we’re the ones who put him into office, and if we refuse to be honest about our own guy, then all of those derisive spitballs lobbed at the other side are nothing more than a grand exercise in hypocrisy of the worst kind.
Does this list speak of a leader who strives for virtue in everything he does? Does it speak of preserving justice and working for the good of the whole? Does it speak of one who is sympathetic to the misfortunes of others? Where, in this legacy, do we find a “greatness of soul”? I can’t find it.
Are we talking about the American peoples’ dream of a corruption free government? Or, is this simply the wet dream of the hedge fund managers, the banksters on Wall Street, and people like the Koch brothers who want to abolish every regulation in place for the sake of profits? Is this really an effort to expand democracy, or is this simply another attempt at a corporate coup d’état?
No one is opposed to young people learning a strong work ethic. It’s a natural part of growing up and proper parenting. But that’s not what Gingrich and his cohorts are referring to. They truly believe that child labor laws should be relaxed or abolished all together in order to create a permanent working class of children.

Not too long ago, The Stew wrote about the law firm of Steven J. Baum, which held a Halloween bash in “honor” of their foreclosed-on victims. They even went so far as to dress up and mock their victims, showing up in costume as homeless people, adding insult to injury, as they ran slip-shod through peoples’ lives and uprooted them from their homes.
As members of Occupy Wall Street shouted about the thousands of demonstrators arrested across America, the president’s supporters in the audience countered with loud chants of “Obama! Obama!” The president then assured the protesters he would listen to them if they showed him the same consideration.
Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, warned that in preventing protesters from camping out in Zuccotti Park, the city has “effectively removed [the protesters’] ability to be there 24/7.”
