We Serve It, Even When It's Hard To Swallow
Even in a week when Republican terrorists – yes, they are terrorists who call themselves and/or sympathize with Republicans – tried to terrify us (the very definition of a terrorist) into silence by bombing a Planned Parenthood clinic in Wisconsin, I can say with absolute certitude that women will not slink quietly into the night.
We wish this was a joke.
Missouri Majority Leader Tim Jones (R-Eureka) was attempting to defend his sponsorship of a new bill that would allow doctors to refuse women abortions, contraception, etc. based on “religious objections,” when he cited his expertise on the subject of legislating women’s reproductive health in the following way…
The latest bit of genius insight from the GOP (which actually stands for Goons On Parade) comes from Tea Party Boy, Senator Ron Johnson. You remember him, of course. He’s the guy who beat Democratic progressive Russ Feingold in 2010. When it comes to birth control, Ron Johnson and his goons have all the answers. Who needs women in the discussion? According to Johnson, if you can’t afford your birth control, just Google it for God’s sake.
Illinois has become the newest state to try to force women into receiving state-mandated ultrasounds before they can obtain an abortion, in the seemingly endless war on women being waged against females in legislatures across the nation. But the Democratic members of the Illinois legislature are fighting back.
Desperate to change the tide of public opinion against them on a national and state level, the GOP is trotting out women like Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) to claim that the whole “war on women” is a distraction by Democrats to get voter’s attention off economic issues. She also insisted that it was Democrats just “trying to scare American women.”
In case you were wondering what desperation looks like…this is it. The RNC has released a new political ad that tries to connect comedian Bill Maher’s controversial remarks about women with President Obama, suggesting that it is the President who is conducting a “war on women.”
The Republicans have been having a field day with women’s rights over the last year and a half. Since regaining control of the House, and several state legislatures the country over in 2010, we have seen more anti-women bills presented than you can shake a stick at. From transvaginal probes to defunding Planned Parenthood to birth control to fetal personhood, you would think we’re living in a man’s world.
But you would be incorrect.

In the aftermath of the public backlash against the whole Komen/Planned Parenthood fiasco, a group of Democratic Senators has launched the campaign “One Million Strong For Women” to battle the constant attempts by conservatives to limit women’s rights regarding reproductive health and related issues.
While the SGK/Planned Parenthood fracas produced a cautiously positive result, news is not so good down in Texas, where a judge upheld the recently passed sonogram law, which requires doctors to perform a medically unnecessary sonogram on women considering abortion, in addition to playing fetal heartbeat sounds and describing the features of the fetus 24 hours before an abortion is performed.
