It’s often hard to tell if the mouthpieces of the Christian right are mentally ill, delusional or just plain obnoxious. I’m thinking it’s a combination of the three. To wit, the latest rant by James Robison posted by Right Wing Watch where he excoriates those who want to practice ‘sinful ways.’ Immorality and greed are just a couple of the ‘sinful ways’ he mentions. According to Robison, we immoral people are forcing our ways on him. He doesn’t much like that.
I confess that I don’t have much interest in religion. I was born Catholic and spent nearly 14 years in Catholic schools, and I’ve always questioned my own religious teachings. That was a taboo when I was a kid. I could never get anybody to answer my questions, particularly the nuns. I was always told, “That’s where your faith comes in.” Unfortunately, I have issues around blind faith. Another thing that puts me off is that I’m a big believer in the separation between church and state. At this stage in our history, religion plays way too big a role in government and legislation. Then I discovered Buddhism or, more specifically, the Dalai Lama.
Video has just surfaced of Rev. Tony Byrd, pastor of the Zebulon Baptist Church in Toccoa, Georgia, addressing lawmakers in the Georgia House of Representatives last month, where he opted not to give the customary opening prayer, but instead went into a religious rant about abortion, gay marriage, and warning the politicians that compromise leads to catastrophe.
Heresy refers to the corruption of specific religious doctrines. It matters little what specific religious tradition one studies or considers – heresy is evident when basic foundational moral beliefs are corrupted or redefined to fit contemporary ‘socio-political’ purposes. When the religious principles are redefined so as to support a specific ideology – there is the beginning of Heresy.

If there’s one thing we know about the right-wing, it’s when they talk about “religious freedom,” they’re really only talking about religious freedom for evangelical Christians, every other religion be damned.

Life in Bryan Fischer’s America would be one in which all of our laws and public policies would be written and enforced in strict adherence to Biblical mandate, even going so far as to put whales to death and shooting bears on sight.
It’s easy to dismiss Rick Santorum as the clown prince of the GOP. I find myself doing it because some of his positions are ludicrous, like prenatal testing encourages abortion. Or that we should end public education and all children should be home schooled. He believes that the Bible is our guidebook and that the Constitution should be minimized. He is the fundamentalist candidate for sure, and there is nothing democratic about fundamentalism. At it’s core, fundamentalism is totalitarian. Rick Santorum, although amusing, is also very dangerous. Particularly when it comes to young impressionable minds.
At the recent National Prayer Breakfast, Eric Metaxas, author of the biography on German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, compared the Holocaust to legalized abortion. Bonhoeffer discovered religion while living in New York and returned to Germany to speak out against Hitler. The right sees Bonhoeffer as a role model because he fought against homosexuality, abortion and other social issues.
Phony and discredited “ex-terrorist” Kamal Saleem is feeding the right-wing’s wacky Sharia Law conspiracy theories by claiming that Muslims in America are now defacing U.S. currency by putting “In Allah We Trust” on paper bills to replace “In God We Trust.”

President Obama’s Administration is not the one stepping over the Constitutional line here. Neither the Catholic Bishops nor the Republican Congress has the right to determine whether this is a religious freedom issue for any American. That is what The Constitution guarantees. You may not force others to adhere to your religious beliefs, even if, especially if, you are one of the nation’s largest religious denominations.
