We Serve It, Even When It's Hard To Swallow
Emily Herx, a well-regarded English teacher at St. Vincent de Paul School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was fired last June after she requested time off to undergo in-vitro fertilization (IVF). According to the school’s Pastor, Msgr. John Kuzmich, Mrs. Herx is a “grave, immoral sinner” for undergoing these treatments because IVF kills embryos and that is morally unacceptable.
It’s amazing how the GOP uses religion to further it’s twisted agenda. In an election cycle, it’s using both sides of the coin. The GOP is generally intertwined with Fundamentalist Christians. This time, they’re trying (rather unsuccessfully) to align themselves with the Catholics.
After Rep. Paul Ryan the Right started using Catholic morality to justify the Ryan budget, political animator Mark Fiore felt a Divine endorsement of GOP economics was in order.
In Massachusetts, the contraception war has been joined between GOP incumbent Scott ‘I Love the Kochs’ Brown and his Democratic challenger, Elizabeth ‘How do you like me now?’ Warren.
We now have an extremely powerful, extremely radical Dominionist movement active within the halls of government, trying to shred and rework the fabric of the country into the image of their religious worldview.

President Obama’s Administration is not the one stepping over the Constitutional line here. Neither the Catholic Bishops nor the Republican Congress has the right to determine whether this is a religious freedom issue for any American. That is what The Constitution guarantees. You may not force others to adhere to your religious beliefs, even if, especially if, you are one of the nation’s largest religious denominations.

Contrary to what the Christian conservative-pandering GOP right-wingers want you to believe, this is a secular nation. It is not a Christian nation, and certainly not a Catholic nation. Our guiding principles are laid out in what we call the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, not in the Old and/or New Testament. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

On Friday, we saw President Obama make the grand compromise in bending to the religious right over the birth control mandate in the Affordable Care Act. It was a fair compromise in most respects, and will still ensure that women have access to free preventative services as well as birth control, even if the religiously affiliated employer chooses not to provide insurance that covers those particular benefits because of their delicate religious sensibilities.

While the SGK/Planned Parenthood fracas produced a cautiously positive result, news is not so good down in Texas, where a judge upheld the recently passed sonogram law, which requires doctors to perform a medically unnecessary sonogram on women considering abortion, in addition to playing fetal heartbeat sounds and describing the features of the fetus 24 hours before an abortion is performed.
