We Serve It, Even When It's Hard To Swallow
The new issue of Newsweek is out and the cover features President Obama with a rainbow halo and the declaration “The First Gay President.” The news magazine’s bold cover comes a week after Obama became the first sitting president ever to declare support for marriage equality.
President Obama has just concluded an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts (to be aired in part on tonight’s ‘World News with Diane Sawyer’), in which he clarified his position on marriage equality, endorsing Same-Sex marriage. President Obama explained his views are based on “several years” of talking to friends, family, and staff about the issue.
Republicans have used the gay community as a wedge issue time and time again and often after one of these anti-gay laws passes we hear about how people were deceived (or confused by campaign ads) and didn’t understand what they were voting for. After their 1996 state statute banning same sex marriage, after watching these fiascos play out in state after state, and after a campaign which spelled out the consequences North Carolinians can make no such claim. They knew what they were doing and they relished it.
Jon Stewart used his best Jersey impression last night to address Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s veto of a gay marriage bill passed by the state legislature last week. Stewart went as far as to wonder what it would be like if we were discussing legalizing “fat” marriage instead of same-sex marriage?
The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled today that California’s Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriages is unconstitutional. The 2-1 decision upheld an earlier ruling by U.S. District Judge Vaughn R. Walker in 2010 that struck down the ballot measure passed by voters in 2010 after a massive campaign primarily financed by the Mormon Church.
